Dan Stafford

Job title
Editor & Creative Director

What is Amuseum?
A playful magazine that uses objects and the nature of its own printed format to explore and reframe stories from history; we’re curious about everything and anything interesting from art, science and culture.

What makes it different to the rest?
I don’t know any other magazine that does quite what we do. We’re really proud of that. Our illustrative approach, sense of humour, cohesively considered content and use of objects to tell stories is pretty unique.

Who makes Amuseum?
Along with a host of contributors (both illustrators and writers) I personally design and edit the title. I’m an editorial illustrator in my other life and I think it gives Amuseum a unique approach to the way we use illustration and layout to explore and illuminate our subject matter.

Who reads it?
Smart, cool, interesting, funny (and probably really attractive) people that you really want to be friends with.

Why do you work in magazines?
It’s a compulsion. I don’t think there’s any other medium that allows communication and a feeling of kinship like independent magazines can.

Aside from the print magazine, what else are you involved in?
Illustration, design and screen writing. Did I mention I’m exhausted?

What would you change about Amuseum if you could?
I’d love to have produced it in the 60s and 70s. The audience would have been hungrier for interesting and obscure stories and facts before the internet made it easier to find them. There was also this incredible renaissance in illustration in advertising before the proliferation of digital photography in that part of the 20th century and it would have really sung on the pages of Amuseum.

Where do you see Amuseum in five years?
On our 13th issue with a larger staff and in the position to commission more original content. Perhaps I should commission a piece on crystal balls…
