Graphic design gets an exuberant new voice with Eye on Design
The AIGA Eye on Design blog launched in 2014, published by America’s oldest and largest design membership organisation and dedicated to telling long-form stories of design innovation. The site is full of smart and characterful design touches, and that same attention to detail has been carried into the new print product, which comes packed with carefully considered flourishes to communicate its excitement and enthusiasm for the subject.
The theme for this first issue is ‘invisible’, and the video below shows some of the ways they’ve translated that into ink on paper. Each issue will have a different guest art director, and this first one has been crafted by Maziyar Pahlevan in his signature monochrome style, but it looks like the rest of the team will remain constant with founder and editorial director Perrin Drumm, managing editor Liz Stinson, associate editor Madeleine Morley, senior editors Emily Gosling and Meg Miller, and designer Tala Safié.
And speaking of invisibility, it’s notable that this all-female team has pulled together an outstanding first issue featuring lots of interesting women, but gender remains entirely incidental throughout – the design is made visible, while the editors remain in the background.
