One of the things I like about running our podcast is that it doesn’t need to be very timely – last year I spoke to magazine makers at Indiecon in September and didn’t get around to releasing the audio until December, and it went down just as well as any other episode.

But this week I ended up moving a bit faster to turn a piece of (almost) breaking news into a podcast episode. Because David Lane, co-founder and art director of The Gourmand, has taken over at frieze magazine, and the first issue featuring his overhauled design hit newsstands yesterday.

I went over to the frieze offices on Wednesday to catch up with him, and find out his thinking behind the changes. Listen to the episode below, and you’ll hear him talking about the new fonts he introduced and the new layout, as well as the things he and the team decided to leave the same. (After playing with several versions of the Frieze masthead, it emerged unscathed, though the cover itself is strikingly different.)

As you might expect in a conversation about a redesign, this is quite a visual episode, so I’m including the cover and a few spreads below in case you’d like to see what he’s talking about. Scroll on past the Soundcloud player and you’ll find them down there.

As ever, you can hear more of my conversations with magazine makers on Soundcloud and iTunes, and if you enjoy this one, make sure you follow us so that we can have next week’s episode delivered to you as soon as it’s released.
