Podcast: Kirsten Algera and Ernst van der Hoeven, MacGuffin
We launched the Stack Awards on Tuesday night this week with an event bringing together some of last year’s winners, and we were very excited to be joined by Kirsten Algera and Ernst van der Hoeven, creators of MacGuffin magazine. They flew in from Amsterdam to be with us, so I dropped in at their hotel room the next morning to record a podcast episode while they were in town.
MacGuffin was named Magazine of the Year in last year’s awards, and it was really lovely to hear what that meant to them. I was also totally fascinated to find out about their process in making the magazine; listen out for the section where they speak about cliche and the importance of leaving themselves open to serendipity, which gives a real insight into how they go about creating such a distinctive title.
This week’s episode of the podcast is sponsored by Park Communications – they were with us on the night, showing off some of the independent magazines they print, and as ever I’m very grateful for their support, which allows us to do things like flying speakers into London. If you’re thinking of making your own magazine, definitely drop them a line to see what they can do for you – they’re genuine print enthusiasts and love to get involved with print projects large and small.
This is our last podcast episode for a little while. I’m going on holiday next week so we’re taking a break, but we’ll be back with more magazine chat in September. In the meantime, you can find all our previous episodes racked up and ready to go on Soundcloud and iTunes, and of course follow us while you’re there so we can deliver our next episode direct to you after the summer.
