Stack at home: Open Sesame, May 2021
Open Sesame is a Beijing-based magazine about China as seen via Taobao, the world’s biggest online shopping platform. Here in the UK we’re so used to thinking of Amazon as the Big Bad of retail that it’s somehow refreshing to realise there’s actually a much Bigger Bad out there. Plus, Open Sesame’s tone is so mischievous, reading about Taobao is a delight. Spotlighting cultural quirks like facemasks for dogs, or Christian flip flops, Open Sesame points out the absurdities of contemporary life as seen through the frantic, hyper-commercialised world of Taobao.
