Stack at home: The Modernist, April, 2020

Our first delivery of lockdown, the latest issue of The Modernist provides a welcome break from the global obsession with coronavirus. Part architectural journal, part nostalgic trip down memory lane to mid-century Britain, it operates at a comfortable distance from the present day; everything in this magazine was once absolutely cutting edge, but time has worn away at the structures and systems and made them feel resoundingly human. It’s also stridently unpretentious in its appreciation of design – this is the only publication we know that would dedicate four pages to a loving history of litter bins, and even put one on its cover (the Town Number One, designed in 1961, of course.)

Below, we’ve rounded up some our favourite responses from subscribers. It’s been really lovely seeing so many posts come in this month. All reading the same thing at the same time feels newly intimate, in these socially distanced times. As always, scroll to the end to see our Stack subscriber of the month!

5. “Keep Britain Modern”

Stack subscriber Nieve O’Brien singles out one of the most evocative spreads in the issue.

4. “Nostalgia for an abandoned future”

An eery caption for eery times, with a nice reading shot.

3. Composition

We like the minimalist composition of this shot of The Modernist, from Stack subscriber Dan Callanan.

2. Seeing double

Two lovely pictures from Spain, courtesy of Stack subscriber Rodrigo Herrera. Nice to see a bit of February’s delivery, The Nib, in the background.

1. Lockdown delivery

We are in love with this image of Stack subscriber Maud Rowell, surrounded by Stack deliveries from the last five months. We’re so happy to still be able to deliver to you during lockdown, Maud. A Stack t-shirt is on its way to you!
