Filling up with The Gentlewoman

The Christy Turlington issue of The Gentlewoman has been out for ages now but I only just picked up my copy. Reading through I don’t know why I left it so long – I love the way it takes itself and its subjects very seriously, while also undercutting everything with a sly, knowing smile.

This photo story is a perfect case in point – some of the fashion world’s most powerful agents are photographed in designer gear, filling up sports cars.

It’s a funny idea, but this isn’t just a big joke – photographer Daniel Riera manages to capture a real sense of character and personality in his pictures, entirely in keeping with a magazine that dedicates time and effort to really getting to know the women in its pages.

The extended captions tread a fine line between fashion editorial and pastiche. In this one, “Audrey Charron of Jed Root creative agency keeps her eye on the money whilst filling up a smart Mercedes AMG saloon.” Brilliantly self-aware, this is a women’s magazine like no other.
