Insider: Lagom magazine
Named after the Swedish word for having just enough, Lagom magazine is a bi-annual title featuring people who manage to balance between work and play while making a living from their passions.
With the third issue fresh from the printers, we asked the Bristol-based founders Elliot and Samantha Stocks to share their experiences from the making of their biggest edition to date.
In the making of this issue we…
Listened to
A lot of techno and techno-ish music, especially as the deadline got closer and we needed to get our heads down. Sebastian Mullaert’s latest release as Wa Wu We kept us sane and provided a great soundtrack while writing the feature on him.
Read
[Sam] Tracks, by Robyn Davidson.
[Elliot] Craig Mod’s ‘Future Reading’ essay.
Watched
The penultimate Season of Mad Men, Marvel’s Daredevil, and various films from our ever-growing Netflix and Amazon watchlists.
Argued about
Whether our intended publish date was too optimistic. It was: we published about a month later.
Worked from
The office building in the garden of the new house we just bought. It’s so good having a dedicated space away from the house and yet within seconds’ reach.
Learned
That binding an insert into the magazine can be rather expensive if you don’t place it between the natural break of the sheets. Oh well! We’ll plan things better next time.
Were excited about
Seeing everything come together. That sounds like such a cliché, but for a while we’d started to have doubts about the issue, but when all of the last bits of content came in, along with the photo and illustrations, everything just clicked. A couple of last-minute changes to the running order helped it all make sense and now we think it might be our best issue yet.
Wish that we had
The budget to visit all of the locations in this issue.
Were surprised by
The fact that we needed even more pages than the last issue. The first had 128, the second had 136, this one has 144. We wanted to make the most of the beautiful photos we got from our contributors.
And everyone should buy a copy because
It’s our most balanced issue yet, and balance is what we’re all about.
