Insider: Perdiz magazine
Last week’s Sampler offer was the latest issue of Perdiz, the beautifully idiosyncratic magazine about the things that make people happy.
We wanted to know more about the process of making the magazine, so I caught up with publishing director Marta Puigdemasa to find out about the people she met, Game of Thrones, and why this is the best issue yet.
In the making of this issue I…
Moved to a new flat :–) And we’re also refurbishing our design studio, Querida.
Met
The amazing women behind the Barcelona roller derby team. A collective in Oakland that are building a giant fighting robot and aiming to create a worldwide sports league of robot wrestling. A hairdresser in Madrid who cuts hair with Samurai swords and fire. And many others – they’re all really wonderful people who follow their dreams no matter what.
Was excited about
Adding an extra 16-page section in this issue. So more pages, and more content! It may sound trivial for most people, but for us it’s an evolution; it took a lot of effort from our side and it’s very good news! We are also looking forward to finding out the results of our new distribution scheme with Central Books and Pineapple Media. It looks like it’s working pretty well so far…
Listened to
Querida’s Spotify playlist of the month while at the office. And to Sigur Rós on loop during a road trip to Gibraltar.
Watched
Games of Thrones. Who didn’t?
Ate
Yummy mini croissants from Mistral’s bakery in Barcelona every time we had a meeting in our art director’s flat. He’s very hospitable and we love meeting at his place because we know we’ll get treats :–)
Was sidetracked by
The hot weather, and by Primavera Sound and Sonar festivals in BCN.
Learned
You can earn good money doing almost nothing from a beautiful spot in Spain. You’ll have to read our lighthouse keeper interview to find out more about it.
Was impressed by
Our new photo editor, Rita Puig-Serra‘s persuasion skills. We wanted to use a photo by Johan Rosenmunthe for our cover. We found it incredibly beautiful and it worked perfectly with our concept; balance. The photographer, however, was really busy at the time and wasn’t really keen on letting us use it. We had already abandoned hope when Rita sent him a last-chance email which straight away got a positive response from Johan. He said Rita was “very convincing”. We never asked her what she promised him in that email, but we are really proud of her!
Was most pleased with
It’s difficult to choose just one piece, but we are really pleased with our photo feature about humans in search of other (and hopefully smarter) civilisations and beings out there in the universe. On a personal level, I love the interview with Joanna Ebenstein [below] of the Morbid Anatomy Museum on the topic of death and why talking about death can help us live our life a little bit better. I also find Lucas Oakeley’s story on being short really touching.
And everyone should buy a copy because
It’s one of our most complete and balanced issues, visually and content-wise. And it’s a bit more mature too. Now we feel comfortable talking about topics we never thought we would be addressing. Also, because we need your support to keep on publishing our happy stories. So thanks in advance! :–)
