Notion turns 60

Music and fashion magazine Notion has hit the ripe old age of 60, and to celebrate they asked Stack to help them put together a special selection of independent magazines responding to the theme of 60.
VNA (above) pulled together a page filled with 60 artists that have graced their pages, while the Boat team responded from Athens with a map of the city made up of 60 images captured in the making of their current excellent issue.

Oh Comely and Juke are juxtaposed nicely, Oh Comely’s celebration in a bowl of soup contrasting with Juke’s characteristic barrage of angular images.

And Rouleur opts for some typically fine photography, while Address compares itself to a pair of 30 denier stockings, via Roman currency, phsychoanalysis and the function of criticism. It sounds like over-reaching nonsense but it’s really not – as with so much of Address it’s clever, funny and inventive, and it leaves me eagerly awaiting issue two.
I really like Notion’s idea of giving control of entire pages over to other editors and designers, and the results are a microcosm of what makes those independent magazines special. This issue of Notion will still be out on shelves for another few weeks yet – well worth seeking it out if you can.
