We have a winner
Congratulations to Ben Dorney, winner of the entire Anorak back catalogue and a free six-month subscription to Stack.
Last week we asked people to tell us which was their favourite childhood magazine and why they loved it, and Ben won for his grandparent-duping devotion to Oink!, a magazine I’d never heard of before, but which I wish I’d had around:
“Somehow, aged about 11, I managed to convince my Gran and Grandpa to switch their gift subscription to me from the Beano to Oink! magazine. I can only assume they never read it as it as they didn’t even approve of me watching Grange Hill. Oink! was daft, disgusting, anarchic and, I have since discovered, quite controversial at the time. It received contributions from, amongst others, Private Eye and Viz writers, the now current SpongeBob Squarepants magazine editor (and Marvel artist) David Leach, BBC’s Mark ‘Lard’ Riley and Charlie Brooker. At the time I appreciated none of this, but simply enjoyed the thrill of each subversive issue.”
Thanks very much to everyone who took part, and to Cathy from Anorak for coming up with such a fantastic prize, and for compiling everyone’s votes into a brilliantly nostalgic Pinterest board. Ben, if you’re reading this, drop me a line with your address details and we’ll get you sorted out with your prize.
On with the week!
