A literary and art magazine published in Australia, issue six of Debris is themed ‘No!’, casting a surprisingly positive perspective from the most negative word in the English language: “It’s the time of no. No war, no genocide, no corporatism, no big business, no oligarchies, no neo-feudalism, no rapacious plunder of land, no capitulation, no phone, no imperialism, no capital, no future.”

What is Debris?
Founded in 2021, Debris Magazine is a literary publication based in Melbourne. Each year we publish two themed issues focused on experimental writing and art.
Debris refers to remains: leftovers, scattered pieces, detritus, refuse. We adopt ‘debris’ as a name to reflect the stories and voices that are not traditionally heard in contemporary Australian society.
What makes it different to the rest?
Debris is built around themes rather than sections. Each issue asks writers and artists to respond to the same idea, which creates unexpected connections between very different forms – poems next to essays, short fiction next to photography.
We focus on experimental work and emerging writers, pay contributors, and edit closely. There’s no advertising and each issue is designed to feel somewhere between a magazine and a book.
Who makes Debris?
I founded and produce the magazine. Each issue is edited by Jon Tjhia and Cher Tan. Malou Messien designs the issue and Carol Que copy-edits it. Sharni Hodge distributes the magazine in Australia and Public Knowledge Books handles European distribution. Each issue features the work of 20 writers and artists through open calls and commissions.
Who reads it?
Mostly writers! But also artists, small press readers and people interested in experimental literature.
Why do you work in magazines?
Literary magazines are often where writers publish for the first time, so they quietly shape who gets to enter the literary landscape. They’re also where a lot of the most interesting work happens – outside the pressures of mainstream publishing.
Aside from the magazine, what else do you do?
I produce short films and documentaries.
What would you change about Debris if you could?
A new logo. We don’t really have a logo.
Where do you see Debris in five years?
I’m not sure what will happen in five years, but right now I’m working toward making it a bilingual French/English publication.
