Mother Tongue 2

A magazine made by mothers, about motherhood, Mother Tongue shows several different versions of the mother / child relationship. There aren’t many children featured in its pages – the focus is very much on mothers and its tone is distinctly mature.
Lots of the women featured focus on their relationships with their own mothers and grandmothers; honest, inclusive and accessible, it paints a picture of motherhood including all its pleasures and pains, but without ever preaching or sounding like it has all the answers.

What is Mother Tongue?
It is a biannual magazine that interrogates (and celebrates) modern motherhood through diverse and inclusive stories spanning art, sex, politics, pop culture and food.
What makes it different from the rest?
It’s not about kids or about how to parent them, it’s about the nuanced lives we are living as mothers — and so much more. On the visual front, we also certainly don’t look like your mom’s mom magazine.
Who makes Mother Tongue?
Natalia Rachlin and Melissa Goldstein, co-founders and editors, Vanessa Saba, our Creative Director and Gigi Jack, our Commissioning Photo Editor.
Who reads it?
Curious multifaceted women who also happen to be moms, who are frustrated by the conventional conversations surrounding motherhood.
Why do you work in magazines?
For the love of the printed page and its ability to host transformative stories.
Aside from the print magazine, what else are you involved in?
We both are freelance journalists and editors working in the art, design and interior space.
What would you change about Mother Tongue if you could?
It’s a constantly evolving thing – the change happens all on its own!
Where do you see Mother Tongue in five years?
Making an independent mangazine is a precarious thing: one day at a time please. But world domination, obviously.
