Piscine is an arts and culture magazine published in Glasgow by people who work full-time in the city’s bars and restaurants. This first issue is themed ‘Working on Work and Working’, with contributors trying to figure out how to balance the demands of their ‘real’ jobs with their ambitions to create something more meaningful.
What is Piscine?
A Glasgow-based arts magazine.
What makes it different to the rest?
We are committed to a lack of form, which we call an amorphous blob. Each issue differs in format in order to reflect the content, and allows artists and DIY scenes and spaces to present their work in ways which best suit them.
Who makes Piscine?
We are an artist-led project. Our core team members are currently: Finlay Mackay, Molly Hooper, Calum Herbert, Briony Godivala, Dylan Richards, Mike Hill, and Ben Woodcock.
But this is who really makes piscine: Ava Ahman, James Adam, Mimi Bhogal, Maria Bustillos, Ned Campbell, Oisín Campbell, Ellie Clappison Smith, Cal Donnelly, Meredith Donnachie, Liv Dugdale, Kem Frances, Liv Frances, Ieuan Francis, Jeff Frost, Geordie Fulljames, Karoline Glusiec, Isobel Greslow, Freddie Guthrie, Josh Hale, Iona Jones, Laurie Knott, Gretel Le Gleud, Joe Learmonth, Tamsin MacArthur, Louis Managh, Leo Managh, Vincent Maria, Kate McMahon, Iris May, Tony Morris, Ruby O’Hare, Connor O’Riordan, Grace Patterson, Verity Pease, Alex Ralston, Matilda Reid, James Ross, Fred Shaw, Torgi Squire, Ben Woodcock, Connie Woods, Mack Young.
Who reads it?
People keen on the arts in Scotland, and those who are interested in what Glasgow is culturally, and where it’s going.
Why do you work in magazines?
We all have an interest in print media, whether it’s from a literary, artistic or design perspective, and we found that it was the most effective and versatile medium to express ourselves to the greatest number of people.
Aside from the magazine, what else do you do?
We are all practising artists of varying media. Performance art, illustration, graphic design, sculpture and so on. But like every other artist, we also work in kitchens, restaurants and cafes across Glasgow (see Issue 1).
What would you change about Piscine if you could?
The name. This being said, there are things we like about it; the toilet humour, the vague reference to the Auld Alliance, the obvious pretentiousness of giving an arts magazine a French name.
Where do you see Piscine in five years?
In five years time, Piscine will be operating as both bastion of the Scottish art scene and evil multimedia conglomerate, looming over Glasgow from our secret hideout inside Piss-Towers. We will indoctrinate the masses through art-propaganda and have many proverbial fingers in many proverbial pies, spanning the globe, including the video media service ‘P-stream’… Or it will be defunct entirely.
