Gothic horror meets contemporary photography in Der Greif magazine
I love the strange associations that are created on the pages of Der Greif magazine. This German photography title never fails to catch my eye with its image selection, and the latest issue has added a new level of intrigue by including excerpts from Mary Shelley’s 19th-century novel, Frankenstein.
Both the pictures and the excerpts have been selected by artist, photographer and Guggenheim Fellow Jason Fulford, and the results are sometimes funny, sometimes affecting, but they always lend an extra sense of depth to the work. As the editors note at the end of the magazine, “There are sixty-seven photographers and one writer represented in this volume… We ask the reader to consider the result – a group effort – as a single work by a hypothetical author.”
It’s inventive and adventurous storytelling, and I’m very pleased that we have copies available to buy from the Stack shop.
