Psychogeography in São Paulo with Flaneur magazine

Each issue of Flaneur magazine travels to a different city and focuses on a single street, drawing upon its history, politics, neighbourhood gossip and much more to create a densely multilayered portrait of the place. This latest issue is dedicated to Treze de Maio, a street in São Paulo that was named after the Lei Àurea, or ‘Golden Law’, which was introduced on 13 May 1888, abolishing slavery in Brazil.

The magazine’s strapline is ‘Fragments of a street’, and the way it’s presented does feel like a collection of incidental pieces, with the reader wandering though the pages as a story builds around them. Given the street’s history, it’s not surprising that the overarching story includes issues of racial inequality, but it also features lots of other themes and images, including water, fire, music and magic, to create an absolutely original impression of this unassuming location.
