How to market a magazine
A couple of weeks ago I travelled over to Spitalfields Market to join in with the Publisher Spring Meet, speaking on a panel about how to market a magazine. The event was organised by the International Magazine Centre and the magazine distributors Ra & Olly, and supported by the printers Park Communications, and it was loads of fun.
I was on the panel alongside Sophie Cross from Freelancer Magazine and Andy Cowles from Cowles Media, and it was all moderated by Nikki Simpson from the International Magazine Centre. As you’ll hear, it was more business-based than the sort of conversations we normally have on our podcast, but it was totally packed with useful insights and information, so I wanted to share it here.
It’s a massive subject, and it would probably be impossible to cover everything you need to know in one night about how to market a magazine. In fact, one of the themes that kept coming up was the scale of the job, and all three of us spoke about the need to focus on specific goals rather than trying to do everything all at once. I hope it’s useful, and I’d love to know what you think to it – would you like to hear more from us about the business side of running an independent magazine? As always if you have any comments, good or bad, please just drop me a line and let me know what you’re thinking.
And if you’re not already following our podcast, just search for ‘Stack Magazines’ wherever you normally get them and we’ll be able to deliver all our new episodes to you as soon as they’re ready.
