With their lavish papers, gorgeous photography and exacting design, independent magazines are notorious for trading on their beauty. But they’re also acutely aware of the ways in which beauty can be commodified and exploited, and use their pages to present their own very specific view of an intelligent allure.

For this next Stack event we bring together a panel of three magazines that have built their identities around creating an original approach to beauty and desire, digging deep to hear the ideas that shape the images on the page.

Featuring:
Ladybeard — A feminist magazine that subverts the format of women’s glossies. Their third issue is dedicated to beauty, challenging conventional ways of thinking about what our culture finds ‘beautiful’

Staple — A nuanced examination of social and cultural experiences. Based in Singapore, their latest issue focuses on the pleasure we derive from the objects around us, giving thought on the social and political significance of the stuff we enjoy

Beauty Papers — A print antidote to the overwhelming beauty industry. Bringing a thoughtful, critical understanding that pivots upon self expression, their fifth issue goes beyond the looking glass to explore vanity, joining the dots between narcissism, Instagram, and the self

Tickets are £6 from Eventbrite. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and talks will begin at 7, with plenty of time to ask questions at the end. We hope to see you there!
