Independents in the north
UPDATE – I’m unfortunately not going to be able to travel because of illness, but the event is still going ahead with all the indpendent publishers listed below, and chaired by Ian Wylie from the Civic Journalism Lab
I’m really looking forward to heading up to Newcastle next month for an afternoon of independent publishing talks, workshops and advice sessions, all aimed at helping more people start their own magazines. We’re partnering with the Civic Journalism Lab at Newcastle University, and we’ll be joined on the trip by the people behind some of my favourite independent magazines from across the UK:
// Eddy Rhead is co-founder of Manchester’s design and architecture magazine The Modernist
// Dagny Tepper is editor-in-chief of Pilot, the brilliantly experimental popular culture magazine from London
// Heather Parry is co-founder of Glasgow-based literary magazine Extra Teeth
We’re going to spend the afternoon talking honestly and openly about the realities of publishing your own independent magazine, hopefully providing some encouragement and inspiration, as well as discussing the many difficulties that come along with making and distributing a print magazine today. The session is free, but you need to reserve your space, so if you have a burning idea for a magazine, and you can get to Newcastle on Wednesday 28th February, book your ticket and we’ll see you there.
