Update

We love working with students. Our magazines are delivered to universities and colleges all around the world, and over the years I’ve given lots of talks and workshops about independent magazines and the changing face of publishing. But it’s always been a bit ad hoc, responding to individual requests and suggestions, so this post is our attempt to set out the different ways we work with students and universities, in the hope we can keep doing it with more people and institutions.

Student discounts
Use the code STACKSTUDENT and you’ll save 10% off all our subscriptions and magazines for the entire time you’re studying. Most of our discounts are only valid on the first payment, so for example if you’re in the UK and you sign up for a monthly subscription, you’ll pay £10.80 for the first month, then £12 per month thereafter. But our student discount keeps on running, so as long as you keep it going, you’ll keep saving on our magazines. (We will occasionally send an email to make sure you’re still a student and not suddenly a fantastically rich management consultant or something.)

Bulk order discounts
Tutors and course leaders can contact us to buy magazines on behalf of their students, and save 50% on our normal prices. Sometimes that’s to stock a college library, sometimes it’s to kick off a creative project, and sometimes it’s just as a gift for students who might not otherwise have come across our magazines. We can work with you to put together a bespoke selection from our stock, at a price you won’t find anywhere else.

Talks and workshops
I love speaking about independent publishing, and I’ve given lots of talks both in person and online, and led workshops that use magazines to help students develop their thinking or advance their own creative projects. We have a huge archive of magazines to draw upon, so we’re able to pick titles that fit with specific projects and subject areas.

Stack Discord
Our Discord server is a brilliant resource for independent publishing advice and inspiration, and it’s free to join. You’re very welcome to lurk quietly in the background if you don’t want to contribute straight away, or jump straight in and start letting us know what you think about whatever we’re discussing.

I’m including a few testimonials below from universities we work with – if you think Stack could get involved with you and your students, please just drop me a line.

“A very inspiring talk and the students loved using the magazines Steve brought in as references for the task – the session was fantastic.”
Aurora Starbuck, Senior Lecturer, BA (Hons) Fashion Promotion, Ravensbourne

“Our students love the magazines that Stack sends every month. I use them as teaching examples – it’s a brilliant way for them to be inspired by what’s happening across the world of independent print magazines.”
Cath Caldwell, Educational Developer and Lecturer, Central Saint Martins

“Thanks again for an amazing and inspiring talk – our students got so much out of it, and have even been out trawling the shops you mentioned, and signing up for their Stack subscriptions!”
Gayle Cantrell, Programme Leader, BA (Hons) Fashion Communication, Northumbria University
