Podcast: Danny Miller, Weapons of Reason
We’ve been completely swamped by the Stack Awards this week – the ceremony took place on Tuesday night and we’ve had a fantastic response (check this overview of all the categories if you haven’t seen it yet). It’s all been very exciting but it also means I haven’t had time to speak to a magazine maker for this week’s podcast.
In a way that’s a good thing, though, because it means I finally have chance to play this interview with Danny Miller, publisher of Weapons of Reason and co-founder of creative agency Human After All. The two of us appeared on stage together at Indiecon in Hamburg back in September, and I took the opportunity to continue our conversation afterwards.
I owe a lot to Danny – he was publisher of Little White Lies when I first started writing for that magazine more than 10 years ago, and he gave me my first introduction to the world of independent publishing. And it’s a huge pleasure speaking to him, because he’s so full of print expertise, and so generous with that knowledge. For example he speaks in this interview about his reasons for creating the Publishing Playbook, the free to access repository of advice for anybody thinking of starting their own independent magazine. And he reflects on his own successes over the years, naming his number one achievement as “still being here”.
As you can probably tell from the interview, I’m a big fan of his, and I’m really pleased I’ve had the chance to share our conversation more widely. If you enjoy this one you can find lots more podcasts with independent magazine people on Soundcloud or iTunes, and of course remember to follow us to make sure next week’s episode is delivered direct to your waiting phone.
