Insider: TANK magazine
Last week we took a look at the making of the longstanding design title Eye magazine. And this week, we’re going behind the scenes on TANK magazine, another title that has stayed fresh through the decades.
Launched in 1998, it’s renowned for mixing fashion with broader culture, and the latest issue investigates our collective obsession with food. Expect your stomach to feel a little rumbly after reading about the making of this one…
In the making of this issue we…
Explored…
What lies beneath our all-consuming obsession with food.

Listened to…
An unbelievable amount of Muzak for our Radio Tank comic section!
Were impressed by…
The range and versatility of our incredible contributors. From AS Hamrah’s semiotic deconstruction of the figure of the chef in 20th century American culture, to Maria Dimitrova’s survey of food in film from Buñel to Julie and Julia, this issue really captured some of our best and most brilliant writers.
We were also incredibly honoured to have Rivka Galchen contribute a fragmentary piece about fries, and our friend the designer Philip Lim contributed a series of elegantly drawn visual recipes (below).
Were most pleased by…
Our Time of No Reply cover shoot by Torbjørn Rødland (below). While we were putting the issue together over the summer, we hosted a talk at our London gallery space with Torbjørn and Michael Mack, of MACK, to discuss his new book Confabulations and his working process. It was a really fascinating insight into how he captures his signature analogue photographs and subjects.
Wished…
That we had had more cooking time!
