Art and science collide in Broadcast

We delivered Broadcast magazine to our subscribers in January this year, and in my accompanying letter I noted that its scientific focus plays a large part in its success. The magazine is published by Pioneer Works, an artist- and scientist-led organisation in Brooklyn, and in the video below managing editor Michael Jones makes it sound like an incredible creative playground, with a busy schedule of performances and exhibitions, and New York’s first publicly accessible observatory currently being built on the roof.

Of course lots of magazines structure their editorial around the arts, but there aren’t many that put science front and centre, and even fewer that manage to do so with such a playful, accessible tone. I was interested to hear him speaking about how they do that, drawing on the expertise of the scientists they have on staff, as well as writers and editors who are able to turn complex scientific ideas into memorable stories. He was also careful to point out that while Broadcast is a product of Pioneer Works, it’s not intended as a purely promotional tool: “We try to make an art and science magazine that reflects the spirit of Pioneer Works, but doesn’t serve as a content marketing arm for the institution.”

It’s a beautifully considered publication and I was delighted to send it out as our first Stack delivery of the year. I hope you enjoy the video below, and if you haven’t seen the magazine yet you can buy a copy from our online shop, or even better, sign up for a subscription so we can start delivering our surprise selections to you every month.
