Behind the scenes on Vanguards magazine
Launched by students James Roberts and Hugo Ross while they were in their final year of studying Fine Art at Edinburgh University, Vanguards magazine explores Scottish design to tell the stories of brands that are producing quality clothes, accessories and other items for an international audience. With their studies behind them, the pair collaborated with 12-B, a design and risograph studio in London, to produce their second issue, which hit shelves at the end of 2017.
James dropped in at the Stack office shortly after that second issue landed, and spoke about their experiences making the magazine, their joy at seeing it on shelves alongside their favourite titles, and why they’re planning to move away from the Scottish focus in future issues. You can hear our conversation in the podcast below, and if you enjoy that, check us out on Soundcloud or iTunes, where you’ll find lots more independent magazine makers speaking about their experiences of making beautiful print.
