Podcast: Steve Anglesey, The New European
Thanks very much for all the messages about the Stack podcast over the last week. It’s good to be back after the summer break, and lovely to hear that so many listeners enjoyed the conversation with Ryan from Hello Mr.
I spoke to him at Indiecon at the end of August, and this week’s episode takes us back to Hamburg again, for the on-stage interview I recorded with Steve Anglesey from The New European. An insurgent newspaper set up in just nine days following last year’s Brexit vote, it was only supposed to last for a few weeks, but this summer it celebrated its first birthday after a year in which it picked up six major industry awards.
It’s an extraordinary story, and Steve’s passion for his subject is unmistakable (especially when it comes to “the nicotine-stained man-frog Nigel Farage” and other leading Brexiteers). As the slow-motion car crash that is Brexit continues to unfold before our eyes, there’s plenty for Steve and his colleagues to report on and lampoon, and I hope this conversation helps to show how they’re going about that task.
If you enjoy this one, you can find lots more of our conversations with magazine makers on Soundcloud and iTunes – follow us while you’re there and we’ll deliver next week’s episode to you as soon as it’s ready.
