Stack Awards: Weapons of Reason
Winner of both Best Use of Illustration and Launch of the Year in the inaugural Stack Awards, London-based Weapons of Reason is a title that uses illustration to provoke action by making complex issues more accessible for the reader.
With entries now open for our second Stack Awards, we check in with the Weapons of Reason team to see what they’ve been up to over the past nine months, and reveal their top picks of this year’s winners.
Where is your Stack Award now?
Our award lives in our meeting room alongside others we’ve picked up over the years. It’s regularly and carefully arranged and re-arranged to make it look as impressive as possible!
What have you been doing since last year’s awards?
We teamed up with IDEO to make our third issue, focused on Ageing (above).
Launched the Reason Review, a newsletter looking at monthly events around the world.
Won a D&AD wooden pencil for our second issue on Megacities (above).
Hosted a screening of Tomorrow at Everyman Highgate.
Given talks at Brighton, Manchester and Loughborough Universities, as well as a whole bunch of other places.
Lastly, which magazine do you think should be recognised in this year’s Stack Awards?
Paul Willoughby: I came across a fantastic Singaporean mag called Rubbish Famzine whilst judging at the D&AD awards. It was by far my favourite mag in the magazines and newspapers category due to its utter uniqueness – nothing else came close. The form the magazine took was that of a flower presser packed full of small leaflets, documents and mini-magazines. I loved the sense of discovery, hand-made marks and found objects – real flowers interspersed in-between pages. I also love that it’s made by a family, hence the name ‘Famzine’! Rubbish really shows what can be achieved with print in the digital age – presenting more of a sensory experience, rather than simply turning pages.
