Vegetables and community in Rebel Roots
Lucas Del Tejo Gómez and Alison Golcher Stone are the editors and founders of Rebel Roots, a Barcelona-based magazine about fruit and vegetables. If you listened to our last episode of the Stack podcast, you’ll have heard me speaking with Andreea Samoilā about All Things Measured. I said in that conversation that a magazine about measurement is unusual even amongst the niche publications that we normally feature, and again in this episode you’re going to hear me telling publishers that their magazine is quite strange.
Because Rebel Roots is by no means an ordinary food magazine. As Lucas and Alison explain, the magazine grew out of a masters programme in design and entrepreneurship, and their approach revolves around creating crazy little characters out of fruit and vegetables, in an effort to make them more familiar to readers who might otherwise look past them.
Lucas says he loves making characters out of inanimate objects, and his illustrations bring a strange sense of personality to the project: “We think of it as going on a date with a fruit or vegetable and learning all about them.” As you’ll hear they’re incredibly passionate about the project, and totally open about the fact that they’re learning as they go, and I hope you’ll enjoy this conversation with Lucas and Alison from Rebel Roots.
