Video review: Table Talk magazine

This is an amazing time to be working with independent magazines, and that’s thanks in large part to Kickstarter. Today’s would-be publishers can throw their odd, esoteric ideas out into the world and one month of furious promotion later they stand a good chance of having the money to turn those ideas into reality.

Table Talk magazine is one such title. Its stated aim is wonderfully off-beat: “Each issue focuses on a concept that pushes the limits of our understanding, an idea or feeling we all experience but struggle to describe.”

A magazine about complicated feelings? Any commercial publisher would run a mile from that sort of pitch, but this is the age of Kickstarter, and Table Talk blasted through its funding target thanks to the support of just 117 backers.

I took a whole pile of magazines on holiday with me last week, and Table Talk was by far my favourite. It’s very definitely a first issue and there are some rough edges that need smoothing down, but I love its ambition and clarity of vision. The magazine is just the start for Table Talk and its founder Benjamin Moe, and I’m really looking forward to seeing where they go next.
