Mental health

Bobbie Johnson is the editor of Anxy, the California-based magazine that aims to break down the stigma around mental health. Anxy won Art Director of the Year and Best Use of Illustration at this year’s Stack Awards, so the day after the ceremony Bobbie came over to the Stack office to talk about their evolving mission, and why a group of people based in Silicon Valley use a print magazine to communicate their ideas.

He comes from a newspaper background, and I was particularly interested to hear him say that whereas newspapers tell the story of what just happened, magazines, with their relatively slow production process and lead times of several months, force editors to consider what will be important in the future, and so have the opportunity to “tell the story of what’s going on right now”.

You may have heard contributing editor Kati Krause speaking about Anxy in a previous episode of the podcast, and I think this new one is even more interesting as a companion piece to that, so if you haven’t already heard it, do go back and check it out. And of course while you’re at it you should follow us on Soundcloud, iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts, so that we can keep on delivering new episodes as soon as they’re ready.
