Magazine events in March

We’ve got two magazine events coming up this month – one cheap and fun, the other expensive and intensive (but also fun).

First up on Monday 24th we’ve got the next Printout, dedicated to the magazines that are striving to make a difference to the world. We’ll be joined by:

Rob Orchard from Delayed Gratification, the magazine of slow journalism
Ibrahim Nehme from The Outpost, creating narrative journalism for the Arab world
Pieter de Kegel from Postr, the Belgians who invade public spaces with their polemic posters

It’s going to be a great night, and tickets are a snip at £5.95.

More expensive, but still great value for money, is the Magazine Publishing Masterclass I’m hosting at the Guardian on the 29th and 30th. We ran the course last month and it was so popular that a second date was added – if you’re thinking about starting a new magazine, or you want to sharpen your thinking on an existing project, this is the weekend for you.

The two days are packed with lectures and workshops, and the class size is limited to just 16 people so you’re guaranteed plenty of opportunity to explore your ideas as well as picking up pointers from others. Our guests for the weekend are:

Guy Andrews from Rouleur on identifying your niche
James Montague from Delayed Gratification (again) on creating and marketing quality content
Jeremy Leslie from magCulture on the state of independent publishing
Esra Gokgoz from Human After All on coming up with a digital strategy

Plus I’ll be speaking about the labyrinthine world of distribution, and will be on hand to run the entire weekend’s classes. Tickets are a substantial £399, but worth every penny – we’ve packed the two days full to bursting with useful stuff you won’t find anywhere else.

Watch out for more events news coming soon, and if you’ve got any suggestions for live events you’d like to see based around independent magazines, drop me a line – I’m always interested to hear new ideas.
