Making magazines is so much about creating something of the moment that it’s easy to become obsessed by the bright new thing – that sparkly launch or bold new concept that captures imaginations.

But how many of those magazines will still be around in five years’ time? Or a year’s time for that matter?

Our next Printout is dedicated to those magazines that have been around the block a few times and have the experience to prove it. They’ve all managed to mix longevity with innovation to remain absolutely fresh and entirely of the moment, satisfying their existing audiences while attracting new readers to their cause. And they’re going to tell us how they do it.

We’ll be down in the basement at The Book Club from 6.30pm on 22 July, with a stellar line up of magazine talent:

// Bruno Bayley is EU managing editor at Vice, the man in charge of a 20-year-old print magazine that sits at the heart of a multimedia empire
// Patrick Waterhouse is editor of Colors, a magazine launched in 1991 and currently enjoying a creative renaissance under his guidance
// Simon Esterson and John L Walters run Eye, the international review of graphic design that they bought in 2008, taking an 18-year-old magazine and giving it a new lease of life

Patrick’s presentation is via video but the others will be with us on the night, so come along for some first-hand thoughts on what it takes to make a truly long-lasting magazine.
