Stack awards: Cover of the year
Have you seen an amazing independent magazine cover this year? Or maybe you’ve published one? Either way, we want to hear about it. The Stack Awards 2015 are our attempt to recognise the best work done by independent publishers this year, and entries close in just over a week.
Cover of the year
So what are we looking for? The first job any cover has to do is stop and make people pick up the magazine, so our judges will be looking for the covers they just can’t resist. That might mean striking typography, beautiful photography or some kind of big, weird illustration – our judges are ideally placed to sort the wheat from the printed chaff.
Steven Heller
The former art director of the New York Times Book Review, Steven is the current co-chair of SVA’s MFA Design: Designer as Author + Entrepreneur programme. He is the author of over 170 books, including Merz to Emigre and Beyond: Avant Garde Magazine Design of the 20th Century.
Jaap Biemans
The guy behind Coverjunkie.com, “an addiction to magazine covers you wanna lick, a celebration of creativity and ace designers”, Jaap is also art director of Volkskrant Magazine, the weekly magazine published with Dutch quality newspaper Volkskrant.
I honestly don’t think there are two people in the world more qualified to judge this category. If you want Steven and Jaap to debate the merits of your work, check out the awards page for all the details of how to enter – remember, entries close on 9 October and we need to have received your magazines by then, so don’t delay!
