Sampler: Mushpit magazine ‘Crisis Issue’
“We’ve been described as ugly, untidy and cheap. That’s actually quite kind, we’ve been described as way worse…and personally as well,” Bertie Brandes of Mushpit magazine says at a recent talk (below). “A graphic designer’s worst nightmare,” adds co-founder Char Roberts.
But it is this unapologetic aesthetic, paired with witty satire and Windows 95-era graphics, that resonates with their readers. Though the pair have an impressive portfolio of work for publications such as Vice, i-D, and the New York Times, Mushpit is more reminiscent of late 90s, early 2000s low-fi girl mags (think J17), but for adults.
