Get stuck into Sandweegies magazine
Nancy Heley is the editor and creative director of Sandweegies magazine, and as you’ll hear in the podcast episode above, she has a passionate love for print, and food, and her adopted home of Glasgow. Graduating from the city’s School of Art, she started work as a graphic designer, but she says that while she wanted to get her teeth into editorial design jobs, she found herself stuck working on logos and packaging projects. Frustrated by the lack of other opportunities in the city, she took a job in a magazine shop and shifted to working as a freelance designer, while she figured out how to make her own publication.
But it was a fateful visit to Outlier cafe that finally made her realise where her future lay: “I had a chicken sandwich, and two and two came together. True story. I was like, ‘This sandwich is so insanely amazing. Imagine a magazine all about sandwiches…'”
She posted her plans to Instagram and was overwhelmed by the response she received. The first issue of Sandweegies launched last year, taking readers on a trip around Glasgow, one chicken sandwich at a time. She says she hadn’t planned any further than that, but when the launch issue sold well, she knew there had to be another, and the second issue was released last month, a breakfast-themed special featuring different interpretations of the city’s famous morning roll.
There’s another sandwich-based issue in the works, but Nancy says that from issue four, Sandweegies is going to broaden its remit, branching out into other types of food.
