Picnic eats its way around LA
The third issue of Picnic is the Hollywood Special, and it’s presented as a quick trip to LA, interviewing the people running some of the city’s coolest, most characterful kitchens. The dishes look delicious and determinedly unfussy – think rotisserie chickens, kebabs, curries and bagels, all served up in small, independent venues with a lot of heart. And Picnic matches the mood; a small, unpretentious, zine-like publication running friendly Q&As and bright, candid photography.
But look a little closer and you’ll see there’s something else going on there too. For example there’s the London-based cook who slips in alongside her Hollywood counterparts; there are the several cars and motorbikes photographed under their covers; and there’s a short section at the back that looks a lot like it was photographed in the British countryside.
