A night of weird print
Strange, funny and totally fascinating, a new breed of publications are turning to print to explore extremely niche interests: from hand dryers, to Trip Advisor reviews, to the sort of people we all love to hate. Sitting somewhere between zines and magazines, they hone in on a single idea in forensic detail, and we’re bringing together four of our favourites for our next Stack Live event on Tuesday 28 May.
On one level these publications are a joke – it’s ridiculous that people spend so much time and money turning their odd obsessions into real print magazines. But there’s something more serious going on here too – when we featured The South London Review of Hand Dryers on the Stack podcast I was struck by the fact that editor Wedgeley Snipes (not his real name) genuinely loves hand dryers. And similarly, illustrator Ian Moore fell into publishing An Illustrated Guide to Trip Advisor Reviews to exorcise some of the demons that had gathered during eight years working in the hospitality industry. This is publishing as therapy, community and experimentation.
At least I think it is. Come along to this Stack Live night to hear from the magazine makers in their own words – we’ve got the people behind four of the most surprising and singular titles we’ve seen so far this year, and they’re going to be speaking about why they do what they do, and how they make it all work.
Featuring:
The South London Review of Hand Dryers
An Illustrated Guide to Bad Trip Advisor Reviews
Terrible People
