Podcast: Ladybeard magazine
It took two attempts to make this week’s podcast. We organised an event with Ladybeard magazine last month (pictured above) and I’d intended to record the audio from that. But when I downloaded the file the following morning I realised that something had gone seriously wrong somewhere along the line, and all I’d captured was unpleasant hissing.
Fortunately the Ladybeard team took pity on me, and we arranged for three of them to come and sit around my kitchen table on Monday evening this week so we could reprise the conversation. Editors Kitty Drake and Sadhbh O’Sullivan and art director Scarlet Evans spoke really interestingly about the pressures of independent publishing, that sinking feeling when it’s all going wrong, and the elation that comes with seeing the finished magazine in print. And Scarlet also lifted the lid on her creative process, when she confessed to stealing her mum’s pink silk top to use as the backdrop for the giant vibrator on the cover of their first issue.
I’m very grateful to Park Communications for sponsoring this episode of the podcast – they printed Ladybeard and were there at our event last month, so their sponsoring this episode makes for a neat fit. And I also have to thank them for being involved with next week’s podcast too – I’m heading off to New York next week on a Park-sponsored trip, so listen out next Friday for a new episode featuring one of the city’s most exciting independent publishers.
And of course if you’re going to be in New York next week, come and say hello at one of the events we’re hosting with Park. We’re at SVA on Tuesday 18th, and in Brooklyn on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th, with a fantastic line up of magazines including Lucky Peach, Cherry Bombe, Victory Journal and Drift. It’s going to be a lot of fun – check the links above for full details.
In the meantime, enjoy this week’s episode of the podcast, and remember to follow us on Soundcloud, iTunes, or whatever else you use for your podcast listening…
