Mother Tongue is a magazine of motherhood, but it’s not interested in telling readers how to look after children. Rather, it focuses on the many different roles that mothers play, drawn from many different experiences of being a mother.

Natalia Rachlin and Melissa Goldstein

Job title
Founders and Editors

What is Mother Tongue?
In its purest form, it is a printed magazine that interrogates contemporary motherhood through a cultural lens. But it’s also what we like to call a micro media brand, working across print, social, and live events, to challenge and hopefully evolve predominant narratives about what motherhood and womanhood mean today.

What makes it different from the rest?
It’s not about children or how to parent them; it’s not only about new motherhood (this is a lifelong job!); it’s not cute or condescending.

Who makes Mother Tongue?
Natalia Rachlin and Melissa Goldstein, co-founders and editors, Vanessa Saba, our Creative Director, and an incredible cast of contributors!

Who reads it?
Mums, not mums, mostly women but also a few cool dudes?

Why do you work in magazines?
Quality, narrative journalism and storytelling with integrity has never been more important. And taking time to tell those stories in a way that stays with people is a really exciting privilege.

Aside from the print magazine, what else are you involved in?
Under the Mother Tongue umbrella we are increasingly involved in branding and consultancy projects, working with brands on content / white label publishing for the page, online, and IRL… it’s an exciting new chapter for MT.

What would you change about Mother Tongue if you could?
It changes by itself all the time! That’s the beauty of magazines: each issue is a whole new (beautiful) beast. But I guess overall, we’re always thinking about how to reconcile the idea of slow media and growth: how do you scale a product that at its very core is about taking time, and being thoughtful? It’s not something we would change so much as something we are always looking for the answer to? So what we would change is: we would like to know the answer! 🙂
