Launched in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion, Solomiya is made by a group of editors and designers based in Kyiv and Berlin. It provides a platform for artists and activists across Ukraine to represent the world around them as they see it, challenging stereotypes and disinformation, and offering a fascinating view of life in the country. This fourth issue focuses specifically on the environment, considering the country’s land, water and air.

What is Solomiya?
As an independent magazine founded in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Solomiya is the result of an engaged decolonial involvement of artists with their environment shaped by ongoing imperial aggression.
What makes it different to the rest?
Solomiya is no magazine reporting on a war zone. We bring subjectivity into the discourse, challenge Western perceptions of Ukraine, and confront politics with art.
Who makes Solomiya?
Ivanna Kozachenko, Vsevolod Kazarin, Andrii Ushytskyi and Sebastian Wells form the editorial team. Anne-Lene Proff and Peter Bünnagel from Kollektiv Scrollan design Solomiya, and SHIFT BOOKS publishes the magazines.
Who reads it?
You! Not? How dare you!
Why do you work in magazines?
I like the collective action of publishing, but there’s a billion more reasons to make magazines. Overall: it might not change the world entirely, but it will certainly leave some traces.
Aside from the magazine, what else are you involved in?
I’m a documentary photographer and artist.
What would you change about Solomiya if you could?
Make it my main occupation, and pay proper fees to our team.
Where do you see Solomiya in five years?
I see an established indie magazine, fostering cultural exchange between an independent, free and secure Ukraine and the rest of Europe.
