An instant classic, it’s the sort of magazine you’ll be proud to have on your shelf for years.

Name
David Lane

Job title
Editor / Creative Director

What is The Gourmand?
A bi-annual food, arts and culture journal that binds inspirational words, images and ideas with the humble and universal subject of food.

What makes it different to the rest?

Timeless high quality, intelligent and in-depth content from across the cultural spectrum presented with very high production values and great art direction. You won’t find reviews of new restaurants, six summer ways with eggs or how to dry heather in your barn. You will find interviews, analysis and criticism.

Who makes The Gourmand?
Myself and Marina Tweed sit at the helm but the journal is made by the incredibly talented writers, photographers, illustrators and designers that we commission and collaborate with for each issue.

Who reads it?

Interesting and interested people who appreciate food, art and culture in equal measures.

Why do you work in magazines?

Because we love to share content that fascinates and excites us with like minded people.

Aside from the print magazine, what else are you involved in?

I am a designer and Art Director. I design artists books for galleries such as the Hayward, design record sleeves for labels like Ninja Tunes, design exhibitions for institutions like Somerset House and work on identity and branding projects.

What would you change about The Gourmand if you could?

Just to have infinite time to work on it, there are ever enough hours in the day for the fun and the not so fun bits.

Where do you see The Gourmand in five years?
The subject really is endless and our approach is unrestricting so I see absolutely no reason why the journal will not still be going strong. We are already working on some special projects; events, exhibitions, dinners and collaborations and these will continue and grow in ambition and reach. There are also plans for a sister publication – same approach and quality, different topic – all very exciting indeed, watch this space…
